Asymmetrically cut crystals as optical elements for highly collimated x-ray beams

Asymmetrically cut perfect crystals, in both the Laue and Bragg geometries, are examined as single crystal monochromators for x-ray beams that are collimated to a small fraction of the Darwin width, as is typical in experiments with coherent x rays. Both the Laue and asymmetric Bragg geometries are plagued by an inherent chromatic aberration that increases the beam divergence much beyond that o...

Dynamical x-ray diffraction of multilayers and superlattices: Recursion matrix extension to grazing angles

A generalized dynamical theory has been developed that extends previous models of x-ray diffraction from crystals and multilayers with vertical strains to the cases of grazing incidence and/or exit below the critical angle for total specular reflection. This provides a common description for extremely asymmetric diffraction, surface ~‘‘grazing-incidence’’!, and grazing Bragg-Laue diffraction, t...

Ultrafast transitions from solid to liquid and plasma states of graphite induced by x-ray free-electron laser pulses.

We used photon pulses from an x-ray free-electron laser to study ultrafast x-ray-induced transitions of graphite from solid to liquid and plasma states. This was accomplished by isochoric heating of graphite samples and simultaneous probing via Bragg and diffuse scattering at high time resolution. We observe that disintegration of the crystal lattice and ion heating of up to 5 eV occur within t...

Versatile soft X-ray-optical cross-correlator for ultrafast applications

We present an X-ray-optical cross-correlator for the soft ([Formula: see text]) up to the hard X-ray regime based on a molybdenum-silicon superlattice. The cross-correlation is done by probing intensity and position changes of superlattice Bragg peaks caused by photoexcitation of coherent phonons. This approach is applicable for a wide range of X-ray photon energies as well as for a broad range...

Ultrafast electron crystallography: transient structures of molecules, surfaces, and phase transitions.

The static structure of macromolecular assemblies can be mapped out with atomic-scale resolution by using electron diffraction and microscopy of crystals. For transient nonequilibrium structures, which are critical to the understanding of dynamics and mechanisms, both spatial and temporal resolutions are required; the shortest scales of length (0.1-1 nm) and time (10(-13) to 10(-12) s) represen...
